Public Memory combines damaged and dubbed percussion, flowing synths, and sparse samples, all connected by producer Robert Toher's ghostly voice. The band's second LP, Demolition, continues the cinematic depth established by 2017's Veil of Counsel EP and 2016's Wuthering Drum LP.
While the album maintains Public Memory's signature krautrock and trip-hop rhythms, Demolition ventures into a wider array of tempos and emotions, using layers of electronic and live drums, Korg synths, and natural samples. Its themes of rebirth and reflection create an atmosphere filled with tape delay, spring reverb, and textures evoking sci-fi and supernatural stories.
Toher skillfully uses space and tension to craft a sound that feels eerie, emotional, and addictive. Each track feels like an existential journey. As Toher sings at the end, "Turning out the lights on your illusion," he embraces change as an inevitable part of life.
